History
The Lunt family has been fishing the waters off Frenchboro, Long Island for nearly 200 years and they have operated fishing businesses on the banks of Lunt Harbor since the 1820s when Israel B. Lunt began buying and selling cod fish. At one point, the fishing fleet that sold to Israel not only included local waters, but stretched all the way into Canada.
In the 1900s, lobster became king, surpassing all other types of fishing in the island economy. In 1951, Sanford "Dick" Lunt started S.L. Lunt Lobster Company, which soon became Lunt & Lunt Lobster Company. Dick who eventually became almost synonymous with Frenchboro operated his fledgling business from his lobster boat, David & Vivian. His wife, Vivian, worked as the company's bookkeeper. During the next couple of decades, Dick's son, David, joined the company and began growing its operation, adding lobster cars, a wharf, and services such as fuel.
In the 1970s, a take-out restaurant was added to the wharf, which, after a short break, reopened in 1987 as Lunt's Dockside Deli. This summer the deli will open for its 26th consecutive year and serves as the social hub of Frenchboro. As the company continues to grow in its 61st year, members of the third, fourth, and even fifth generation play a role in the family business.
